Frequently asked questions
Who is covered by the Cleaning Services Award?
Employers in the contract cleaning services industry throughout Australia and their employees: cleaning under contract (including event cleaning), hygiene and pollution control, trolley collection (other than trolley collection under the Retail Award) and minor property maintenance incidental to cleaning (clauses 4.1 and 4.2).
Does the award cover cleaners employed directly by a hotel, hospital or school?
No. It covers contract cleaning businesses. Cleaners employed directly by another business are usually covered by that industry’s award (clause 4.6).
When do the 2026 pay rates start?
From the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026, after the Annual Wage Review (clause 15.1).
Where can I check the official award?
In the consolidated award published by the Fair Work Commission (MA000022); the Fair Work Ombudsman also publishes pay guides.
Is the award rate the most I can be paid?
No. Award rates are minimums. An enterprise agreement or an employment contract can pay more, never less.
How many classification levels are there?
